In stock
North America, Miocene, ca. 23 to 5 million years ago. A fossilized vertebra from a large prehistoric whale, with the exact species and find site unknown. The specimen shows a thick, rounded centrum with lateral transverse processes and a partially preserved neural spine rising from the dorsal surface, with mineralization and surface wear consistent with long-term burial. Condition: Professionally prepared, with repairs and restoration. Spinous process is probably reattached but missing vertebral arch. Transverse processes are both reattached, and possibly restored using material from another specimens. Losses to peripheries. Light mineral deposits and stable condition.
Provenance: private West Covina, California, USA collection, dug on the property belonging to Benjamin Milton Lanier
