$1,040.00

In stock

Oceania, Indonesia, Borneo, Dayak Kayan / Kenyah, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A tall wooden hampatong ancestor-guardian figure with elongated proportions and a calm, watchful face, its surface deeply weathered and likely carved from dense ironwood, a durable material well suited to years outdoors in a humid jungle climate. Traditionally placed along pathways or near the edges of longhouses, such figures signaled the protective presence of ancestral spirits and served as spiritual guardians for the community. Size: 6.5″ W x 49″ H (16.5 cm x 124.5 cm); 51″ H (129.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Weathering from age and exposure to elements. Old inactive insect activity, resulting in losses to the shoulder areas as shown. Interior upper torso is hollow due to insects, with thin areas of remaining wood layers. Pressure fissures throughout. Gray patina to surface. Mounted on a custom base.

Provenance: private Rogers, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Bosio collection, Miami, Florida, USA, 1960-2000
