Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. 20th century CE. A graceful Indonesian kris displaying the refined marriage of steel and wood that defines this iconic Southeast Asian blade tradition. The slender blade is forged with visible swirling lines of nickel within the steel, a pattern known as pamor, created through the careful folding and layering of different metals during the forging process. These organic, flowing patterns are not merely decorative – in Javanese and Indonesian belief they are thought to carry symbolic meaning and spiritual power, each pattern associated with particular virtues, protection, or fortune. The blade rests within a smooth wooden sheath whose warm honey tone complements the darker steel. The handle curves gently upward in the classic ergonomic form typical of kris hilts, designed to sit naturally in the hand while also reflecting regional carving traditions. Size with sheath: 19″ L x 3.7″ W (48.3 cm x 9.4 cm)

When the blade is drawn from its sheath, the wood releases the faint but distinctive aroma of sandalwood, an element that adds a sensory dimension to the object and reflects the traditional use of fragrant hardwoods in kris fittings. Both weapon and cultural emblem, the kris has long held a place of honor throughout Indonesia, serving not only as a blade but as a ceremonial and spiritual object often passed down through generations. This exampleis known as an “executioner’s” kris due to the straight blade that was designed to be thrust through the clavical and end up piercing the victim’s heart.

Condition: Sheath is not original to blade and thus does not completely fit. Hilt is slightly loose. Otherwise, kris and sheath are intact
