Lot 123, Auction 3/19/2026: Polished Ammonite Fossil Cluster in Upright Matrix

$1,430.00

In stock

South East Africa, Madagascar, Jurassic to Cretaceous period, ca. 200 to 66 million years ago. This striking upright display showcases a natural stone matrix embedded with eight partial and full ammonite fossils, each revealing the elegant spiral geometry that has long fascinated both collectors and scientists. The fossils vary in size and visibility – some are remarkably complete, while others emerge partially from the matrix, offering a dynamic sense of depth and geological layering. In most specimens, the outermost shell layers have eroded away, exposing the intricate ammonitic suture patterns. One ammonite near the base retains much of its outer shell, which has developed some iridescence due to the presence of aragonite in the calcium rich shell. The stone matrix has been expertly prepared and shaped to stand vertically on an attached base, creating a sculptural presentation that balances the raw texture of the ancient seabed with the polished ammonites. Size: 10″ W x 16″ H (25.4 cm x 40.6 cm); 18″ H (45.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Professionally prepared, cut, and polished. Several fossils were reattached to the stone matrix during the preparation process, but indiscernible from the front side. Mounted on a custom base.

Provenance: private Berthoud, Colorado, USA collection
