$325.00
In stock
Europe, Early Medieval to Post-Medieval periods, ca. 9th to 17th century CE. A group of four metal artifacts including three miniature gargoyle or grotesque heads dating to the 17th century and one Early Medieval bronze strap end dating to ca. 850 to 1100 CE. The strap end, pierced with multiple attachment holes and decorated with a stylized zoomorphic motif, would have served as a reinforced terminal fitting for a leather belt or strap. The miniature gargoyle heads, cast with exaggerated features and open mouths, reflect the enduring European tradition of grotesque architectural ornament and decorative metalwork inspired by the fantastical figures found on Gothic buildings. Size of largest (strap end): 1.4″ L x 0.8″ W (3.6 cm x 2 cm)
Condition: Loss to corner of strap end. All have expected weathering and abrasions to surface. Rich patinas throughout.
