Ancient Near East, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 650 BCE. A Luristan socketed bronze axe head transformed into a striking anthropomorphic form, where weapon and figure merge into a single sculptural statement of power, protection, and identity. The axe is cast with a flaring blade at one end and a hollow socket at the other, designed to receive a wooden haft, while the central body rises in a tapering column that evokes the human torso. At the upper section, a molded human face emerges from the bronze, its features rendered with quiet restraint. Almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and a subtly defined mouth give the figure an alert yet composed expression, suggesting watchfulness rather than aggression. Flanking the face are two pierced loops that curve outward and back toward the body, resembling stylized arms or shoulders. These loops may have served both symbolic and practical purposes, possibly for suspension, attachment, or reinforcement. Size: 6″ L x 2.7″ W (15.2 cm x 6.9 cm)
The surface is covered with a deep green and brown patina, the result of long burial and oxidation, which softens the contours while emphasizing the sculptural modeling. Traces of wear and corrosion are consistent with age and use, reinforcing the object’s authenticity and archaeological character.
Anthropomorphic axe heads are among the most distinctive creations of Luristan metalwork. Produced by highly skilled bronze casters, these objects are widely interpreted as prestige weapons, ceremonial implements, or votive offerings rather than purely utilitarian tools. The incorporation of the human form may reflect beliefs in protective spirits, warrior ancestors, or the animation of weapons with symbolic life force. Combining functional design with expressive figural imagery, this axe head exemplifies the imaginative and technically accomplished bronze tradition of Luristan, where objects of warfare were elevated into potent symbols of authority, ritual power, and artistic innovation.
Condition: Cleaned in modern times. Weathering to surface with abrasions and loss of detail in areas as shown, but, otherwise, intact and excellent with rich green patina and scattered earthen deposits.
Provenance: ex-T.F. Holy Lands collection, formed since the 1960s
