Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bembe; West Africa, Nigeria, Chamba, 20th century CE. A compelling pairing of Central and West African sculptural traditions, this lot comprises two carved wood nude figures – a Bembe male from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a Chamba female from Nigeria – each embodying distinct regional aesthetics while sharing a powerful emphasis on the human form. The Bembe male figure stands in a frontal, upright posture with elongated torso and cylindrical limbs. The head is slightly oversized, crowned by a smooth cranial contour and framed by prominent ears that project laterally. Almond shaped eyes and a refined, angular face convey controlled intensity, while the arms fall close to the sides in a reserved, formal stance. Bembe sculpture often functioned within ancestral and spiritual contexts, serving as embodiments of lineage figures or mediators between the living and the spirit world. Size of larger (Chamba): 3.5″ L x 2.9″ W x 11.7″ H (8.9 cm x 7.4 cm x 29.7 cm); 12.5″ H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.

In contrast, the Nigerian Chamba female figure displays a more dynamic stance. Her knees bend slightly, and her arms curve forward in a sweeping arc, creating a sense of motion and vitality. The head rises in a pointed coiffure, and the facial features are boldly articulated, with pronounced eyes and an open mouth that lends expressive presence. Chamba figures are frequently associated with fertility, protection, and spiritual power, and the emphasis on form and gesture underscores themes of vitality and generative force.

Both figures retain a rich, darkened patina from age and handling, with visible tool marks and faceted planes that attest to hand carving. Together, they present a dialogue between two sculptural languages – one reserved and monumental, the other animated and expressive – offering a concise survey of twentieth century African figural carving and its profound engagement with the human body as vessel of power, identity, and ancestral memory.

Condition: Both have chipping with losses to feet, as well as stable fissures, nicks, and abrasions in areas. Otherwise, both have liberal remaining detail with rich patina throughout.

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico USA collection
