Viking Bronze Neck Torque w/ Decorative Beads

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A gorgeous viking torque comprised of a singular strip of tightly-spiraled bronze arranged in a circular presentation. The lower half of the torque displays twelve crescent-shaped bronze beads with openwork arms and cylindrical tangs, and a thirteenth bead hangs in the middle as the central pendant. The torque and its components were once a cohesive piece of jewelry, though each component has been strung on a modern metal wire for presentation. Layers of smooth green and russet patina envelop the bronze components and make this a wearable example of stylish Viking craftsmanship! Size (outstretched): 24" L (61 cm); size (in wearable form): 7.5" W (19 cm); size (largest bead): 1.25" H (3.2 cm).

The Vikings - groups of people who left Scandinavia to plunder and colonize northern Europe (and who travelled as far afield as northeastern North America and the great kingdoms of the Middle East) - had a distinctive artistic tradition, although many of the metals that they had were acquired through conquest and the bronze for this torque likely was melted down from other bronze objects, perhaps some acquired by looting a monastery or trading in the Mediterranean. Bronze jewelry also served as a form of easily transported coinage; this piece would have spoken to the wealth of its owner.

Condition: Wearable as shown. Torque reassembled from multiple large pieces. Bronze components are ancient and metal wire is modern. Bronze components have surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small losses to some terminals of spiraled tubes and terminals of crescent beads, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits as well as great green and russet patina throughout.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Neil Phillips collection, New York, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s
