TL IN PROG Moche V Fineline Stirrup Vessel w/ TL Test

Sold
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche V, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel with a highly-burnished surface, a planar base, a globular body with a rounded shoulder, and a wide stirrup-shaped handle with a tapering conical spout and thick banded decorations. The vessel displays a fantastical pair of anthropomorphized crab people with clawed and segmented arms, trapezoidal crab-shaped bodies with pronged and spiralized designs, both human and crustacean legs, and a human head with a grand feathered headdress, all delineated with red slip atop a cream ground. Surrounding each figure are a plethora of abstract sea life including jellyfish, octopi, and squids. The Moche people were well-known worshippers of the sea and its inhabitants, and have depicted many sea creatures in anthropomorphized forms. A beautiful example replete with intriguing iconography and rich pigmentation! Size: 5.875" W x 7.625" H (14.9 cm x 19.4 cm).

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Condition: Vessel repaired from several large pieces with some resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Some restoration along base and to stirrup handle and spout. Surface wear commensurate with age, nicks and chips to spout, handle, and base, light fading to original pigmentation, and some yellowing to cream-colored areas. Scattered areas of light earthen deposits, and nice root marks and mineral deposits throughout.
