18th C. European Silver & Stone Ring w/ Text - 5 g

$895.00
Europe, ca. 1729 CE. One of my favorites, a handsome silver ring with a wide, square stone set into its face. The corners of the stone have been cut diagonally, creating a handsome eight-sided shape. The stone appears to be some kind of agate, banded with a creamy grey color and a deep wine red color. The face is incised to have a cross, a two rows of backwards Latin letters and symbols, and the date, 1729. The backwards nature of the letters and number suggest that the ring was made to be a stamp or seal. The silver edges of the bezel have repousse linear motifs on them, and the shoulders of the ring have lightly raised bands, giving further decoration to the surface. Size: 1" W (2.5 cm); US size: 6.75; total weight: 5 grams

Condition: Dark patina on metal surface. Edges of bezel are slightly crushed/smoothed as if through wear, as are the decorations on the shoulder of the ring. Small scratches on the face, but overall the face is very readable.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
