Viking Bronze Enameled Cross

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 12th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop and expanded circular terminals. Each recessed cavity - on the arms, terminals, and center of both the obverse and reverse sides - displays remnants of the original yellow enameled adornments; the five circular areas are representative of the five wounds Christ suffered during the Crucifixion. This style is often referred to as a “Viking cross,” because they are often found in ancient Viking village sites and burial mounds due to the indigenous peoples’ gradual conversion to Christianity. The bronze surfaces have developed a wonderful dark-green patina throughout. Size: 1.125" W x 1.375" H (2.9 cm x 3.5 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, very slight bending to overall form, remnants of original yellow enamel visible, with great dark green patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
