18th C. Russian Bronze Enameled Cross - Very Rare

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop and an interior Golgotha cross. The monogram uPbC (King of Glory) is above the Golgotha cross, and IC XC (Jesus Christ) is on either respective lateral terminal. The image of Adam's skull in the cave is beneath the slanted crossbar, and MP (the place of the skull has become paradise) is underneath that. The design on the verso, while heavily faded, would have displayed a five-heart design, representative of the five wounds suffered by Christ during the Crucifixion. The cross has a lustrous dark-brown patina throughout, and remnants of the original light- and forest-green enamel designs are still visible on the obverse. Size: 0.95" W x 1.625" H (2.4 cm x 4.1 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, slight bending to overall form, minor loss to suspension loop, fading to lettering and details, remnants of original green enamel designs visible, and dark brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
