18th C. Russian Bronze Enameled Cross

$125.00
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop, bar-shaped beams of light extending from each exterior corner, and an interior Orthodox cross. The monogram UPb CBp (King of Glory) rests above the interior cross, and IC XC (Jesus Christ) is inside of each respective lateral end. Underneath the slanted footrest is the image of Adam's skull in the cave, and the monogram MP (the place of the skull has become paradise) is beneath that. The verso displays a five-heart design, representative of the five wounds Christ suffered during the Crucifixion, as well as several illegible monograms. Remnants of the original creamy yellow enameled designs are visible on both sides, and complements the overall light brown patina wonderfully. Size: 1.125" W x 2" H (2.9 cm x 5.1 cm).

Condition: Two exterior light rods missing. Age-commensurate surface wear, fading to lettering and details, slight bending to overall form, original enamel remnants visible, and light brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
