18th C. Russian Bronze Enameled Cross

$225.00
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th century CE. A large cast-bronze cross shaped to represent the wings of the Seraphim, the most important angels in the Kingdom of Heaven. The interior Golgotha cross is flanked by a spear (KT) and vinegar stick (KA), two instruments of the Passion, each with their respective monograms. Above the Golgotha cross is UPb CBp (King of Glory), and IC XC (Jesus Christ) as well as CHb BXIN (Son of God) on either respective lateral end. There is a three-layer suspension bail, representative of the Holy Trinity, and below the interior cross is an image of Adam's skull in the cave. The verso has the first verse of Psalm 68 in Cyrillic which, when translated, reads, "Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered, let those also that hate Him flee before Him." Both obverse and reverse display remnants of the original blue and white enamel decorations as well as a thin light brown layer of patina. Size: 1.25" W x 2.25" H (3.2 cm x 5.7 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, remnants of original blue and white enamel, minor fading to details and lettering, very slight bending to overall form, and lovely light brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
