18th C. Russian Bronze Enameled Cross

$265.00
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop, four pellet-shaped light rays on each exterior corner, and an interior Golgotha cross flanked by the spear and vinegar stick, two instruments of the Passion. The monogram UPb CBp (King of Glory) is above the interior cross; IC XC (Jesus Christ) is on each respective lateral terminal; HN KT KA (Conqueror, Spear, Stick) is beneath the main interior crossbar; and MAPE (the place of the cross has become paradise) is underneath the image of Adam's skull in the cave. The faded verso has the first verse of Psalm 68 in Cyrillic which, when translated, reads, "Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered, let those also that fear Him flee before Him." Remnants of the original blue and white enameled desigs grace both surfaces, and nicely complements the rich brown patina. Size: 1" W x 1.7" H (2.5 cm x 4.3 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, very slight bending to overall form, fading to details and lettering, remains of original white and blue enamel details, and rich brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
