18th C. Russian Bronze Cross

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop and an interior Golgotha cross with a flanking spear and vinegar stick, two instruments of the Passion. Above the interior cross is the monogram UPb CBp (King of Glory), with IC XC (Jesus Christ) on each respective lateral end, and HN KT KA (Conqueror, Spear, Stick) underneath the main interior cross bar. Below the slanted footrest is the image of Adam's skull in the cave, and beneath that the faded monogram MP (the place of the skull has become paradise). The verso is unadorned, though the entire cross is coated in a rich light-brown patina. Size: 1.3" W x 2.125" H (3.3 cm x 5.4 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, slight bending to overall form, fading to details and lettering, with nice light-brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
