18th C. Russian Bronze Cross

$195.00
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop, four pellet-shaped light beams extending from the exterior corners, slightly expanded peripheral edges, and an interior Orthodox cross flanked by the spear and vinegar stick, two instruments of the Passion. The monogram UPb CBp (King of Glory) is above the interior cross; IC XC (Jesus Christ) is on each respective lateral end; HN KT KA (Conqueror, Spear, Stick) below the main interior crossbar; and MAPE (the place of the cross has become paradise) beneath the image of Adam's skull in the cave. The expanded exterior border has two Cyrillic quotes; when translated, the first states, "the sun hid its light and the moon turned into blood;" and the second says, "Before Thy cross we bow down O Master, and Thy Holy Resurrection we glorify." The verso displays a diamond-shaped motif, representative of the wounds suffered by Christ during the Crucifixion, and the entire cross has a lovely layer of brown and green patina. Size: 1.3" W x 2.2" H (3.3 cm x 5.6 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, very slight bending to overall form, fading to lettering and details, with green and brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
