17th C. Russian Bronze Enameled Cross

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 17th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop, four pellet-shaped light rays on each exterior corner, and an interior Golgotha cross flanked by the symbolic spear and vinegar stick, two instruments of the Passion. The monogram UPb CBp (King of Glory) is above the interior cross, IC XC (Jesus Christ) in on each respective lateral end, and HN KT KA (Conqueror, Spear, Stick) is underneath the main interior cross bar; underneath the image of Adam's skull in the cave is MAPE (the place of the cross has become paradise). The verso has a large crucifix, and inside are two translated Cyrillic quotes; the first states, "the sun hid its light and the moon turned to blood;" and the second says, "Before Thy cross we bow down O Master, and Thy Holy Resurrection we glorify." Both sides are covered in remnants of original white and blue enameled designs, and nicely complements the light-brown surface patina. Size: 1.25" W x 2.05" H (3.2 cm x 5.2 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, slight bending to overall form, fading to lettering and designs, remnants of white and blue enamel visible on both sides, and light brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.
