17th C. Russian Bronze Enameled Cross

$195.00
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 17th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop, four pellet-form light rays radiating from each exterior corner, and an interior Orthodox cross. Though faded, three prominent monograms are visible: uPbC (King of Glory) above the interior cross; IC XC (Jesus Christ) on each respective lateral end; and MAPE (the place of the cross has become paradise) beneath the depiction of Adam's skull in the cave. The verso has a lovely floral pattern, and is representative of the wounds Christ suffered during the Crucifixion. The cross has a lustrous brown patina across all surfaces, and is complemented wonderfully by the original yellow-green-hued enamel remnants. Size: 1.25" W x 2.05" H (3.2 cm x 5.2 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, bending to overall form, fading to lettering and details, yellow-green enamel remnants visible, and dark brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
