17th C. Russian Bronze Enameled Cross

$195.00
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 17th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop, four pellet-form light rays extending from each exterior corner, and an interior Orthodox cross. While faded, three monograms are present: uPbC (King of Glory) above the interior cross; IC XC (Jesus Christ) in each respective lateral terminal; and MP (the place of the skull has become paradise) underneath the image of Adam's skull in the cave. The worn verso displays remnants of a five-heart design representative of the five wounds that Christ suffered during the Crucifixion. Evidence of the original creamy-yellow enameled designs are visible on the obverse, and a rich green-brown patina coats both sides. Size: 1.125" W x 1.75" H (2.9 cm x 4.4 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, slight bending to overall form, fading to details and lettering, remains of original yellow enamel designs, and green-brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
