17th C. Russian Bronze Cross

$250.00
Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 17th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop, four pellet-form light rays extending from each exterior corner, and an interior Orthodox cross flanked by the symbolic spear and vinegar stick, two instruments of the Passion. The monogram uPbC (King of Glory) is above the interior cross, and IC XC (Jesus Christ) is on each respective lateral terminal. Beneath the slanted footrest is the image of Adam's skull in the cave, and MP (the place of the skull has become paradise) is underneath. Around the main interior crossbar are two Cyrillic quotes; translated, the first says, "the sun hid its light and the moon turned into blood;" the other states, "Before Thy cross we bow down O Master, and Thy Holy Resurrection we glorify." While the verso is unadorned, the entire cross displays a wonderful light-brown patina. Size: 1.125" W x 1.95" H (2.9 cm x 5 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, very slight bending to overall form, fading to lettering and details, and light brown patina throughout. Extensive wear to verso. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
