Roman Gold & Agate Intaglio Ring, 5.2 g

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A fine and petite ring comprised of 97% gold (equivalent to 22K+ gold) with an curved band and an ovoid bezel. Within the bezel is a stunning banded agate intaglio displaying a miniscule incised image of a woman standing in front of small bird. A fabulous and wearable example of ancient high-quality artistry! Size (ring): 0.7" W x 0.625" H (1.8 cm x 1.6 cm); size (finger opening): 1.5" W (1.3 cm); size (intaglio): 0.45" L x 0.3" W (1.1 cm x 0.8 cm); quality of gold: 97% (equivalent to 22K+); total weight: 5.2 grams.

Condition: Ring shank does not fit ring sizer, but perhaps wearable on very slender fingers or as a pendant suspended from a chain. Minor abrasions to ring and intaglio, and minor softening to some incised details, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits within some recessed areas.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, acquired in the 1960s
