Greek Hellenistic Gold Earring w/ Dionysus, 4.2 g

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A singular earring of an elegant presentation comprised of 95% gold (equivalent to 22K+ gold) with a coiled parabolic suspension hoop and a bulbous body. The face on the main body depicts Dionysus (also Dionysos), the Greek god of wine. He presents his stylized visage with a prominent nose, petite eyes under dramatically-curved brows, nicely-contoured cheeks, and dozens of small grape bunches composing his coiffure. When worn, the face would be oriented upside-down. A wonderful example of wearable ancient gold! Size: 0.25" W x 1.35" H (0.6 cm x 3.4 cm); quality of gold: 95% (equivalent to 22K+); total weight: 4.2 grams.

Condition: Wearable as shown. Slight bending to overall form, light indentations and softening to facial details, and minor abrasions, otherwise intact and excellent. Light earthen deposits within some recessed areas.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
