19th C. Greek Orthodox Wood Icon - Crucifixion

Eastern Europe, Greece, ca. 19th century CE. Painted in rich jewel tones on a wood panel, a depiction of Christ on the Cross on Golgotha, surrounded by angels and figures who are traditionally featured in this scene, i.e. the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. A vivid representation of the death of Christ on the cross with blood dramatically flowing from his stigmata, so symbolic as the cross is often interpreted as a bridge between the earth and the heavenly realm - executed in a quaint provincial, folk art style and furbished with a frame. Size: 20.25" L x 15.375" W (51.4 cm x 39.1 cm); 21.625" L x 16.75" W (54.9 cm x 42.5 cm) with frame

Condition: Expected surface wear with pigment losses and abraded areas commensurate with age. Some stains and nicks to the back of the wood panel. Frame could easily be secured better.

Provenance: Ex-private Ventura County, CA collection
