Massive Amethyst Quartz Crystal Geode Section

South America, Bolivia, millions and millions of years ago. A stunning, oblong section of amethyst (purple quartz) with several small pale-yellow quartz inclusions and a single massive yellow quartz crystal from the interior lining of a large geode. Geodes form from hollow bubbles inside a layer of rocks. Rain or other water sources falling on the exterior of the rock cause the elements within it to flow into the bubbles which form beautiful crystals like these within. The name of this popular purple gemstone is Greek in origin and means "not drunken." Some scholars suggest that this was due to the belief that Amethyst had the power to stave off the effects of alcohol; however, most believe that the Greeks were probably referring to the near wine-like hue of some amethyst stones. Size: 18" L x 9" W (45.7 cm x 22.9 cm).

Condition: Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, and small chips and losses to some amethyst and yellow quartz crystals. Underside is sealed and has some plastering to the surface. Sharp points to some crystals.

Provenance: ex-private Barios collection, Bolivia
