Lot of 2 Celtic La Tene Iron Knife Blades

Ancient Central / Northern Europe, Celtic Iron Age, La Tene (sometimes called Celtic) culture, ca. 500 BCE to 1 BCE. A wonderful pair of hand-forged iron knife blades, each with a thick head, a sharpened edge, and a slender tang. Each blade is sharpened along the straight edge rather than the traditional curved side, indicating these could have been used for shaving wood, separating skin from bone, perhaps even for primitive surgical procedures. Size of longest (smaller blade): 5.875" L (14.9 cm).

Condition: Surface wear and expected oxidation commensurate with age, slight bending to overall forms, with some nicks to blade edges and tangs. Bending to tip of one blade head and tip of tang on the other knife. Light earthen deposits throughout.

Provenance: ex-private Green collection, York, United Kingdom
