Roman 22K Gold / Black Stone Beaded Necklace

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. An elegant, striking necklace composed of a 22 karat gold chain studded at regular intervas with dozens of matte black stone seed beads. At the center is a large gold plaque with an applied gold floral motif at its center. A single chain of gold and stone beads hangs down from the center of the pendant. The chain has eighteen small, round, gold beads in between the stones and links. The hook-and-eye clasp is decorated with two small gold beads. This example of expert Roman craftsmanship, probably once owned by a wealthy Roman woman, is still wearable. Size of pendant: 1" W (2.5 cm); length of chain: 14.75" L (37.5 cm); 27.1 grams
