Rare Roman Silver Pendant w/ Standing Warrior- Lot 72, Auction 3/7/2019

Sold

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. In a word, WOW! This beautiful pendant is comprised of 98% silver and presents a finely executed relief of a warrior in full regalia – donning a handsome helmet, cuirass, and tunic – and holding an intimidating spear in his right hand and a shield in his left – all against an inverted piriform panel. The warrior stands in composite profile, and is framed by a border comprised of two beaded bands surrounding a curvilinear one. At the lower end is a petite visage – perhaps belonging to Medusa or an Erote, and above is an integral loop. The chain, made of copper and iron, may have been created later. Size: 1.5″ W x 2.5″ H (3.8 cm x 6.4 cm); 4.5″ H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand. Chain ~ 5″ L (12.7 cm). Pendant weighs 15.3 grams.

Condition: Expected age wear with some fissures to the lower section of the border and encrustation on the verso. This said, the iconographic imagery is very well preserved, and the silver has developed a beautiful patina over the ages.

Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA
