Prehistoric Anasazi Black-on-White Ladle, ex-Land- Lot 108, Auction 4/17/2018

Sold

Native American, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), Southern Colorado Plateau, ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A beautiful, large example of a ladle in the McElmo black-on-white pottery tradition. It is well polished, slipped, and has a pearly white surface with a finely-painted black decoration of interlocking lines, triangles, and steps. The ladle has a thick handle with a slight tip at one end that is pleasing to hold and a deep, ovoid bowl. Made for heating and serving food, probably ultimately deposited with a deceased member of the community or left in an abandoned domestic space. Size: 11″ L x 6.55″ W x 3.5″ H (27.9 cm x 16.6 cm x 8.9 cm)

Condition: Small chips to rim. Two stable but unrepaired cracks halfway down the sides at the widest part. Nice preservation of motifs.

Provenance: ex-private collection of Lewis Land
