Neoclassical 20K Gold Pendant / Cameo of Athena

Sold
Europe, Neoclassical Period, ca. 19th century CE. A delicate, beautifully carved shell cameo depicting the profile head of the goddess Athena, clad in her crested warrior's helmet. The delicate coloration of the shell provides depth to the carved features. It is set into a round 20 karat gold pendant with a brooch clasp on its back. The pendant form resembles a shield, furthering the martial theme of the piece. The Neoclassical period saw immense northern European interest in the Classical world, in part inspired by the budding science of archaeology. Artists looked to the deep past for inspiration, but brought an imaginative sensibility to their depictions of it. Size: 1.15" W (2.9 cm); length of cord: 20" L (50.8 cm); 8.1 grams
