Large Viking / Norse Carbon Steel Axe Head- Lot 77, Auction 2/6/2019

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A hefty cast-carbon-steel axe head comprised of an ovoid socketing shaft with a thick butt, a sturdy neck, and a broad blade which droops slightly on the bottom. Axes like this may have been used in battle as a throwing instrument or for hand-to-hand combat, though it was likely used for more utilitarian purposes such as chopping and shaping wood or mud bricks. Size: 8.125″ L x 2″ W x 3.1″ H (20.6 cm x 5.1 cm x 7.9 cm).

Condition: Iron has been treated in modern times with black material to stabilize oxidation. Minor nicks to blade edge, body, and socketing shaft, with minor abrasions and light oxidation in some areas, otherwise intact and very good.
