Large Viking Iron Socketed Axe Head- Lot 103, Auction 10/25/2018

Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A hefty cast-iron axe head comprised of a rectangular socketing shaft with a thick butt, a sturdy neck, and a broad blade which droops downward towards the outer edge. Axes like this may have been used in battle as a throwing instrument or for hand-to-hand combat, though it was likely used for more utilitarian purposes such as chopping and shaping wood or mud bricks. Size: 7″ L x 4.625″ H (17.8 cm x 11.7 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, small nicks and chips to blade edge, neck, and shaft, with normal oxidation as expected. Light earthen deposits throughout.
