Calima Redware Phalliform / Mammiform Alcarraza- Lot 127b, Auction 5/9/2019

Sold

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Valle Del Cauca, Calima, Yotoco Phase, ca. 300 to 1300 CE. A fabulous mold-formed pottery alcarraza of an intriguing form replete with mammiform and phalliform details. The bulbous body rests upon a base of six engorged mammaries constituting the overall structure. The pinched shoulder and domed top resemble a phallic head, and a pair of tapering conical spouts project from beneath either terminal of an arching handle. Faint traces of black-on-red resist details adorn the highly-burnished exterior. Size: 6.25″ W x 6.5″ H (15.9 cm x 16.5 cm).

Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces with light restoration, resurfacing, and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to body, neck, spouts, and handle, with fading to areas of original pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory label as well as old inventory number written in black ink on base.

Provenance: ex-John Rich collection, California, USA. John Rich was a notable Hollywood producer/director.
