Ancient Bactrian Conical Alabaster Cup

Central Asia, Bactria, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. An ancient conical vessel with a flat base and thin walls, skillfully carved from banded alabaster of rich golden hues with some deep red and dark brown mottling - the result of an association with an iron oxide. Alabaster is a material prized by sculptors, because its relative softness enables it to be readily carved. Size: 4.25" W x 5.25" H (10.8 cm x 13.3 cm)

Condition: Repaired at center. Repair is well done and difficult to see. Small chips and scratches on surface commensurate with age.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
