Rare 19th C. Collection of 10 Eskimo Bone Tools- Lot 237, Auction 12/29/2020

North America, Native American, Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Inuit Eskimos, ca. 1880 CE. A rare ensemble of ten carved Eskimo tools in a variety of forms from the late 1800s, likely carved from caribou bone or the bones of another native mammal. The tools consist of two bone-handled metal scalpels with one having a beveled edge; four smoothing tools with incised designs and pierced ends; a scraping instrument with a protruding edge; a thin clip with a tapered end design; a two-pronged fork with a carved dark-colored fish-shaped handle; and an intricately-carved open-work butter knife with concentric circle designs and a bobbin-shaped end. Size of largest tool: 0.625″ W x 7.375″ H (1.6 cm x 18.7 cm).

Condition: Minor wear and losses to some carved details, tarnishing to metal scalpel blades, and darkening to some areas. Large butter knife repaired on handle.

Provenance: private Chicago, Illinois, USA collection, acquired in the 1980’s
