Chinese Han Dynasty Glazed Pottery Well- Lot 55, Auction 7/20/2019

Sold

East Asia, China, Western Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A hand-built ceramic model of a well topper with a wide base tapering to a thick circular rim. A pair of slanted pillars extend upwards from the rim and support a terraced roof with upward-projecting corners. The purpose of the slanted roof is to prevent rain water and other airborne materials from contaminating the natural underground water supply. Drawing water for use in daily life and agricultural practices was of the utmost importance to agrarian members of Han Dynasty China, and realistic models like this example serve as a humble reminder of such necessities. Size: 5.125″ W x 8.375″ H (13 cm x 21.3 cm).

Condition: Pillars reattached to base rim and roof reattached to pillars with small chips, earthen stabilization material, and light adhesive residue along break lines. Small area of restoration to corner of roof. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks to base, roof, and pillars, with some light roughness across most surfaces. Nice earthen deposits throughout.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
