Sold
Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Inca hinterlands (Chucu), ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A beautiful terracotta plaque of a rectangular form with nicely-shaped corners and a lightly-concave face. The obverse side is decorated with three abstract human figures in red, blue, and yellow pigment (made from mica) among a field of similarly-colored rows of spots and four alpacas in faded pigments, the one behind the yellow being almost invisible. Plaques like this were placed as offerings to Pacha Mama and Pacha Papa (Mother and Father Earth) to ensure health among the livestock and among human inhabitants of the clan. Condition: Small nicks and abrasions to peripheries and corners, with fading to original pigmentation, and fire-darkening along the verso, otherwise excellent. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of original pigmentation throughout.
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hillberg collection, California, USA
