Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful jasper intaglio depicting a youthful man, perhaps the god Apollo, with flowing hair, a handsome face, and a nude, muscular chest. This is set into a modern 18 karat gold brooch of teardrop shape, with round, disc-shaped diamonds inlaid around the edges of the brooch. Size: 0.9" W x 1.6" H (2.3 cm x 4.1 cm); weight: 12.8 grams
Condition: Light scratching on intaglio surface. Intaglio is antique and gold setting is modern and stamped on back with "329" and an unreadable signature.
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, collected in the 1960s
