Roman Gilt Bronze Domed Phalera (pair)

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of domed or boss-shaped gilded cast bronze phalerae, each a sculpted button awarded to and worn by Roman soldiers on their breastplates. Each is in the form of a shield boss with incised decorations on its face. Four pins on the underside of each allowed it to be attached to clothing. Size of largest (they are similar in size): 1.1" W (2.8 cm)

Condition: Both are intact. Slight bending to pins on the back and some encrustation. Pale green patina shines through where the gilding has come away, with most of the gilding remaining.

Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA
