Roman Bronze Patera Handle - Hound

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A delightful, hollow cast bronze example of a patera handle terminating in the elongated head of a wolf with a fierce spout and ears flat back on its head. The patera was used for serving drinks and food at banquets, or for carrying libations used in religious ceremonies and funerals. High quality bronze examples often have either a ram or wolf head finial on their handles. Size: 5.3" W (13.5 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Piece is just the handle, with loss to one side of the plate used for attachment. Nice remaining details on form.

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection
