Rare Roman Marbled Glass Jar - Cobalt Blue

$995.00
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A fabulous cast and blown mosaic flask comprised of canes of deep cobalt blue, white, and periwinkle blue glass. The vessel presents a spherical body with a dimpled, concave bottom, a tubular neck, and funnel lip. Note how the mosaic canes were artfully marvered into the surface to create elegant swags of milky white ribbon-like patterns throughout the body, shoulders, and neck. Then the artisan inflated the form, thus amplifying this effect to add to the drama of the decorative program. Much like gold-band glass, such vessels created by using various canes of glass are called "color-band" or "marbled glass". A wonderful ancient Roman glass! Size: 2.375" in diameter x 3.25" H (6 cm x 8.3 cm)

Condition: Repaired from a few large pieces with some visible break lines. A few bubbles that are close to the surface, divots and chips to the surface as shown. Some weathering film/deposits.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
