Medieval English Iron Shovel - Smithing Tool

Northern Europe, England, later Medieval period, ca. 12th to 15th century CE. A fascinating reminder of the quotidian, this is an iron shovel, found accompanying smithing tools. The shovel is shallow, with slightly raised sides and a long, flat handle that curls around itself at the terminal, forming a loop for attachment. A ring through this loop allows us to picture this item hanging on the wall of a smithy alongside several others, awaiting use. Size: 4.45" W x 27.85" H (11.3 cm x 70.7 cm); 27" H (68.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Tip of shovel is partially lost. Nice oxidized surface.

Provenance: ex-private Green collection, York, England, United Kingdom
