Large 19th C. German Bellarmine Glazed Stoneware Stein

Europe, Germany, ca. 19th century CE. A large, beautiful stoneware Bellarmine stein with a body that bulges at the waist, tapering on either side to a round foot and a narrow mouth with a slight lip. A sturdy handle flows from shoulder to just below the rim. The body is decorated with a blue-on cream motif of a single large flower within a thick border. Deeply incised lines within the ceramic surface give the piece a homemade, hand-crafted look. Size: 7.6" W x 12.7" H (19.3 cm x 32.3 cm)

Condition: A few small chips and nicks on surface commensurate with age, with some small losses to glaze, but overall intact and in excellent condition.

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection
