Northern Europe, Dutch, Renaissance, ca. 1420 CE. A single leaf from a breviary manuscript, handwritten in Dutch on vellum. There are twenty-two lines of beautiful calligraphic text with several large initials in red and blue - along with select words in red. The piece is matted and set in a glass-fronted, gilded frame so that both sides of the page can be viewed. A breviary (Latin breviarium meaning abridgment) is a book that contains liturgical texts - daily service, official prayers with psalms, readings, and hymns recited at specified hours of the day; it is also called the liturgy of the hours. Size: visible Breviary leaf measures 3.25" L x 2.25" W (8.3 cm x 5.7 cm); 13" L x 12" W (33 cm x 30.5 cm) with framing

Condition: Normal waviness to the vellum. Writing is vivid. The leaf has not been examined outside of the frame. Glass on verso is attached with brown tape. Wired for suspension.
