European Bronze Age Pecked Stone Boat Axe Head

Northern Europe, Early Bronze Age, ca. 2000 to 1500 BCE. A large axe head with four distinct sides, a thick blade edge, and a central hafting hole carved in the body. The pecked stone has a lovely brown color, and the overall shape resembles a primitive style of boat. A lengthy wooden handle would have been slotted through the hafting hole and secured with tightly-bound strands of reed or leather. Size: 4.875" L x 2.375" W (12.4 cm x 6 cm).

Condition: Minor nicks to body, hafting hole, and blade edge, with some roughness across most surfaces due to erosion of pecked stone. Light earthen deposits throughout.

Provenance: ex-private London, England, United Kingdom collection
