18th C. Western European / British Iron Halberd

Western Europe, possibly British Isles, ca. 18th century CE. An iron halberd with a beautiful point that is both deadly and decorative. The head is elaborate and symmetrical, with upward and downward-curving points forming a guard and a long, tapering point with a thick midrib. Instead of a tubular socket, this halberd has wide langets and is attached to its pole by flat-headed nails. Halberds like these were largely symbolic, having transformed from the sturdy weapons of the 16th century to these slimmer models. Halberds were the weapons of rank for sergeants. Size: 7.75" W x 91" H (19.7 cm x 231.1 cm)

Condition: Dark patina on the blade and on the handle. Tiny nicks and scratches on the wood commensurate with age.

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection
