Taino Stone Axe Blade - Petaloid Form

Pre-Columbian, Dominican Republic, Taino peoples, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A lovely hand axe of a petaloid form, hand-carved from a mottled brown stone with light and dark veining. The handle is smooth with rounded edges, faces, and butt, slightly convex faces, and a spatuloid blade head with an arching edge. Hand axes like this were typically employed during ceremonial events or left in tombs as funerary offerings. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 3.7" W x 7" H (9.4 cm x 17.8 cm).

Condition: Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, and small nicks to body, butt, and blade edge. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory label on butt.
