Prehistoric Anasazi Black-on-White Ladle

Native American, Southern Colorado Plateau, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A beautiful, hand-built pottery ladle which has been well-polished, slipped, and has a pearly white surface with a finely-painted black decoration of circular, swirling, linear, and abstract geometric motifs. The ladle has a thick handle with a slightly-forked end, a large scooping bowl, and a thin rim. Made for stirring and serving food, this example was probably ultimately deposited with a deceased member of the community or left in an abandoned domestic space.
