Mayan Greenstone Face Pendant

Pre-Columbian, Mayan, ca. 550 to 950 CE. Hand-carved and string-cut from a piece of beautiful greenstone of stunning light green hues, a face pendant presenting an expressive visage with a lobed coiffure, pronounced eyes, protruding nose, high cheek bones, and a broad smile - perforated behind the forehead for suspension. Scholars believe that the Mayans associated the color green with vegetation, water, and renewal. A lovely piece that stands on its own as a sculptural work but may also be worn as a pendant. Size: 1.125" H (2.9 cm); 2.875" H (7.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Pendant has slight nicks to peripheries as is commensurate with age, but is otherwise excellent. Old collection number written on verso of pendant. Collection label on underside of base. The pendant can easily be removed from the stand, should one choose to wear as a pendant.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Laurence Witten collection, Florida, USA
