Sassanian Translucent Stone Pendant Seal

Near East, Sassanian Empire, ca. 500 CE. A rounded, near-translucent pale orange stone seal with a flat face incised with a symbol of three reeds rising from ferns. Seals bearing personal designs are one of the most enduring symbols of the Sassanian Empire, which was a prominent and influential kingdom that had great influence throughout the Old World after the fall of Rome. Comes on a black leather cord approximately 24" in length (61 cm); size of stone: 0.85" W x 0.55" H (2.2 cm x 1.4 cm)

Condition: Very light surface wear commensurate with age; motif is very clear.

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
